A local reporter has been forced to confirm that Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel was not “high” during a recent interview, after it went viral on social media for the wrong reasons.
Ahead of Wednesday’s College Football Playoff defeat to Ohio State, Gabriel spoke with sports anchor Brenna Greene for KOIN Sports – Portland’s CBS affiliate. The interview was conducted early in the morning, but fans joked that Gabriel may have been “high” from the night before as he went off on several tangents.
When answering what “being at his best looked like” after vowing to deliver a big performance against the Buckeyes, the Ducks quarterback began discussing nice grass, warm weather, and why fans prefer sitting in the sun rather than in the rain. It was a very relaxed interview and far from the usual sharp responses many players offer, but some fans were suspicious.

The reporter noticed that her replies were flooded with theories, and in an attempt to defend Gabriel, she issued an update. When reposting the original interview, Greene wrote: “Saying this once and once only: media day was at 8 AM and an hour. Dillon was not high.
“Hes already silly and Im sure the combined exhaustion of how early it was and the amount he was in demand probably contributed to this quote. Kind of annoyed something innocent and funny has been co-opted butttt thats the internet for you.”
Although Gabriel spoke about his love for the Rose Bowl and warm weather during his interview, it was his worst enemy against the Buckeyes. Oregon was flawless this season and entered the College Football Playoffs 13-0 only to be blown away by Ohio State during a 41-21 defeat.
The Buckeyes led 34-8 at the break, coming close to shutting out the Ducks who scored their first points of the game with zero seconds remaining in the second quarter. Wide receiver Traeshon Holden caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Gabriel before receiver Justius Lowe converted a two-point attempt.
Until then, it was one-way traffic, as Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard had 269 yards and three touchdown passes in the first half. Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith had 161 yards and two touchdowns, while Emeka Egbuka had 68 yards and one touchdown.
It wasn’t just in the air where Ohio State was dominant, as running back TreVeyon Henderson broke through the Oregon defense with a stunning 66-yard touchdown run. The Ducks restored some pride in the second half, with running back Noah Whittington rushing into the endzone before Holden scored his second of the game.
The damage was already done, with Oregon’s season now over while the Buckeyes advanced to the semi-finals. Ohio State will next face Texas, who needed overtime to beat Arizona State 39-31.
