The Paper is set to release in under a month and fans just got their first look at the spin-off series. The Office fans aren’t fully sold on the new faux documentary series

While The Office is a thing of the past, the creators are bringing a new twist to their fans.

On Sept. 4, Peacock is slated to drop a new show called The Paper, which follows a failing local midwestern newspaper and its new editor-in-chief. On Thursday, the network released a trailer, giving fans a first look into what to expect. The trailer begins with a typewriter referencing the original series with a text that says, “Several years ago, a documentary crew filmed the story of Dunder Mifflin. Now they’ve found a new subject.”

The trailer showcases a few of the characters fans can plan to meet, including a group of ragtag group of journalists and a few volunteers to join the crew. The volunteers, though, seemingly have very little experience when it comes to news gathering.

The IMDb description reads, “Documentary crew searches for new subject, finding a dying Midwestern newspaper and its publisher’s efforts to revive it using volunteer reporters.”

The show stars Domhnall Gleeson, Tracy Letts, and Molly Ephraim. Plus, fan-favorite Oscar Nuñez will return to the screen to play Oscar Martinez from the original series. It’s unclear exactly what Oscar’s role in the show will be, but he does make it clear during the trailer that he isn’t thrilled about being a documentary subject again, stressing that he doesn’t consent.

Fans are hesitant about the news, concerned that it won’t live up to the legacy crafted by the original series. A fan on Reddit wrote, “This looks like it could be a good show but it’s probably going to struggle because it’s related to the office and people hold the show in such high regard. There are some solid actors in here that I recognize from other things so I’m optimistic it’ll be a good watch.”

Another said, “Cautiously optimistic that this won’t suck… I’m hoping since they’re “reporters” that they’ll take a page from Parks and Rec and interact with the outside world/crazy townies more.”

This isn’t the first time The Office creators have tried their hand at exploring a new type of career path. Previously, they developed the widely successful Parks and Recreation, which was originally conceptualized as a spin-off of The Office. It explored the lives and careers of local politicians and administrators in a quirky town.

“Best part was seeing Oscar, other than that it felt more like parks and rec than the office,” a fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, said about The Paper.

Another fan said, “I didnt think the trailer was particularly funny, but i love the cast and have faith in the creative team. So heres hoping that people show up for it because shows like The Office and Parks took their time to figure themselves out and I hope this show is given time too.”
