SPORT NEWS: Former Texas WR Criticizes Quinn Ewers Amid Massive NIL Deal Rumors.giang

Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers finds himself at the center of speculation as he weighs his options for the future of his football career. With the 2025 NFL Draft on the horizon, Ewers has yet to decide whether to declare or stay in college for another year. If he opts to remain in school, the talented signal-caller is rumored to be a hot commodity, with reports of jaw-dropping NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) offers aimed at luring him to transfer.

On Tuesday, On3 reported that one program has allegedly offered Ewers as much as $6 million to join their team, adding to the growing buzz around his potential return to college football.

However, not everyone is impressed by the speculation—especially one of his former teammates, who didn’t hold back in expressing his opinion.

“Wasting y’all money [for real],” wrote ex-Texas wide receiver Johntay Cook on social media. Cook, who recently transferred to the Washington Huskies after spending two seasons with the Longhorns, made it clear he doesn’t share the high regard some programs have for Ewers.

Cook’s Career at Texas

Cook’s pointed comment comes after a relatively quiet stint at Texas. As a sophomore in 2024, Cook appeared in six games, recording eight catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns—nearly identical to his freshman stats in 2023, where he also tallied eight receptions for 136 yards. Despite limited production, Cook’s criticism of Ewers highlights lingering tension between the former teammates.

Ewers’ College Football Legacy and Future

Ewers, who transferred to Texas from Ohio State in 2022, has been a key figure for the Longhorns, helping them reach the College Football Playoff this season. On Wednesday, Texas will face Arizona State in the semifinal, a game that could potentially mark the end of Ewers’ college career. If he declares for the draft, he’s expected to be a top prospect.

However, if he chooses to return, the rumored NIL offers could play a significant role in his decision.

While the idea of a $6 million NIL deal underscores Ewers’ immense value, Cook’s reaction suggests not everyone in his orbit believes he’s worth the hype. The critique from his former teammate adds another layer of intrigue to the quarterback’s looming decision.

As the Longhorns prepare for their playoff showdown, the spotlight will remain firmly fixed on Ewers—not just for his on-field performance, but also for the drama surrounding his future.
