SPORT NEWS: Cowboys Release Ezekiel Elliott Again with Embarrassing Typo.giang

January 3, 2025 by giang Leave a Comment

For the second time in his career, Ezekiel Elliott has been released by the Dallas Cowboys. The team granted the veteran running back’s request ahead of Week 18, giving the 29-year-old an opportunity to potentially join a playoff-bound squad if the opportunity arises.

The announcement came on Tuesday when the Cowboys took to social media to confirm Elliott’s release. The post featured a statement from team owner, president, and general manager Jerry Jones, expressing his admiration and gratitude for the three-time Pro Bowler’s contributions to the franchise. However, what should have been a tribute to one of the team’s most iconic players was overshadowed by an embarrassing typo: Elliott’s last name was misspelled in the first line of the announcement.

“Statement from Cowboys Owner, President and General Manager Jerry Jones regarding the team’s release of Ezekiel Elliot today,” the post read, omitting the second “t” in Elliott’s name.

A Painful Oversight for a Franchise Icon

The typo struck a sour note, especially given Elliott’s illustrious history with the Cowboys. Over seven seasons with Dallas, Elliott etched his name in the franchise’s record books. He ranks third in all-time rushing yards (8,488) and rushing touchdowns (71), trailing only Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett. His impact extended beyond the stat sheet, becoming a key figure in the Cowboys’ offensive identity during his tenure.

Elliott burst onto the NFL scene in 2016 after being drafted fourth overall, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors with a staggering 1,994 yards from scrimmage and 16 touchdowns. He followed that up with another 2,000-yard season in 2018 and remained a reliable contributor for the team until his initial release in 2023.

A Return That Fell Short

After spending one season with the New England Patriots, Elliott returned to Dallas in 2024, rekindling hopes of a storybook reunion. Unfortunately, his second stint with the Cowboys did not live up to expectations. Elliott managed just 295 yards on 86 touches and struggled to regain his former explosiveness.

His role diminished over the season, culminating in a disappointing stretch where he tallied only 77 rushing yards over his final eight games. Elliott’s last appearance with the Cowboys was a forgettable two-yard performance in a lopsided 41-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. His return failed to capture the magic of his earlier years in Dallas, leading to this latest release.

Jerry Jones’ Farewell Statement

Despite the rocky reunion, Jerry Jones’ farewell statement reflected deep respect and appreciation for Elliott’s contributions to the team.

“Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster today,” Jones said. “As I have said many times previously, Zeke’s impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him, and wish him the absolute best.”

What’s Next for Elliott?

As a free agent, Elliott could still find himself on a playoff contender’s roster before the postseason kicks off. With his veteran experience and knack for finding the end zone, he may offer value as a short-yardage or depth option for a team making a championship push.

For now, the Cowboys’ parting gesture is a reminder to double-check even the smallest details when honoring a franchise legend. Hopefully, Elliott’s next team will ensure his name—and his legacy—are treated with the respect they deserve.
