Pete Alonso has been tipped to sign a $130million contract despite free agency options dwindling.

The 30-year-old entered free agency having left the New York Mets at the end of the season. But his hunt for a lucrative contract hasnt gone to plan with several teams who were seen as potential destinations for him opting for other solutions.

Therefore, Alonsos most realistic appears to be a return to the Mets for the upcoming season and president of baseball operations David Stearns is reportedly aware of Alonsos current situation. Stearns appears to be taking a cautious approach with Alonsos agent Scott Boras with the Mets said to have offered the four-time All Star a three-year, $90m deal with multiple opt-outs.

Stearns previously stated that the Mets would love to bring Alonso back and said that the franchise does have the financial weight to make moves that improve the team. I think our ownership has consistently demonstrated that theres going to be resources when we need them, Stearns said.

There is the ability for us to make baseball moves when we think that theyre there to improve the team, and were going to continue to pursue a wide variety of areas to continue to improve our team.

FOX Sports’ Deesha Thosar gave his understanding of the situation, stating that he thinks that Alonso will ultimately re-sign with the Mets. “I have always expected Alonso to end back up with the Mets, and I’m not changing my answer now,” Thosar wrote.

“The Mets know firsthand how pivotal Alonso’s role was in their 2024 playoff run  and even though he had a substandard regular season, his ninth-inning go-ahead home run off Devin Williams in the wild-card series propelled his club all the way to the NLCS.

“Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns can try his best to take sentimentality out of the equation, but I think the emotional tie to Alonso might just push Steve Cohen to get the deal done somewhere around $130 million for five years.”

Alonso remaining with the Mets would be brilliant news for the team following the acquisition of outfielder Juan Soto. Alonso would proved protection in the line-up for the former Yankees star who crossed the New York divide to pen a record-breaking deal worth more than $750m.

The Mets have also re-added left-hander Sean Manaea on new terms as he re-signed for 2025. Manaea moved to New York last January from the San Francisco Giants before he opted out of his contract and became a free agent. Manaea eventually put pen to paper on a three-year, $75m deal and will continue in a rotation room that also includes No. 1 Kodai Senga and $34m Frankie Montas. David Peterson and Tylor Megill will also remain in New York.
