The Sugar Bowl has been postponed 24 hours after the horrifying terror attack in New Orleans.
The Sugar Bowl will be played at the Caesar’s Super Dome just one mile away from where attack had taken place. Police have confirmed 10 people have died after a car ‘intentionally’ plowed through New Year’s Eve revellers, with the incident happening at around 3:15am. At least 30 more have been injured.
Safety issues will undoubtedly be raised at this point, with the arena in which the game will be played being just a short walk from the incident – where authorities remain. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell confirmed the incident in the early hours, stating: We do know that the city of New Orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack.
What have the NCAA said?
“The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the terrible events from early this morning, Hundley said in a statement. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are in ongoing discussions with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels and will communicate further details as they become available.
What have officials said?
Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said in a press conference on Wednesday morning that she wanted the city and its visitors to continue enjoying New Orleans despite the horrific attack.
We are going to make sure our routes and our Superdome are safe today for the game, and yet we had this tragic event and were sorry to everyone, but we do want you to go about the day, just stay away from Bourbon Street, she said.
New Orleans Emergency Medical Services confirmed the heartbreaking news that 10 people have died while 30 have been transported to the nearby hospital. Public safety partners remain on the scene with local police and medical officials.
“There are 30 injured patients that have been transported by NOEMS and 10 fatalities,” the city said, using an acronym for the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services.
