The Sugar Bowl will go ahead 24 hours later than planned after a horrifying terror attack has seen 10 people killed on New Orleans’ Bourbon Street.
Police confirmed that 10 people have tragically died after a car ‘intentionally’ plowed through a group of people celebrating the New Year, with the incident happening at around 3:15am. Around 30 more people have been injured and are in hospital.
Official and authorities remain at the scene with further news continuing to break in recent hours, with the Sugar Bowl Committee and New Orleans Police coming together and confirming that the game will go ahead.
What has been said on the incident?
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anna Kirkpatrick said: “We are going to make sure that our routes and the Superdome are safe for today and yet, we had this tragic event, and we’re sorry again to everyone in our community.”
Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said: “The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the terrible events from early this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are in ongoing discussions with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels and will communicate further details as they become available.”
Further police will be deployed from Atlanta for New Orleans and around the Superdome, with the Atlanta Police Department stating: “In light of todays development and as an added precaution, specialized units and additional personnel will be further deployed to the Downtown and Midtown areas to ensure the continued safety and security of residents and visitors. Our thoughts and prayers are with the City of New Orleans and the NOPD.”
Who will be playing in the Sugar Bowl
Georgia (2) will come up against Notre Dame (5) in one of the more highly anticipated games of the Elite Eight (quarter finals). Despite having a better record, the Fighting Irish (12-1) will enter the game as the underdogs, after beating Indiana in a close game that finished 27-17.
The Bulldogs (11-2) had a first-round bye, meaning they’ve had much more time for their players to get healthy while being well-prepared to face Notre Dame. The current SEC Champions, Georgia, have a perfect 3-0 record against Notre Dame, and remain the favorites despite being without starting quarterback Carson Beck.
Replacing him will be sophomore Gunner Stockton – a Georgia native who grew up around 200 miles north of the Bulldogs home field of the Sanford Stadium. He’ll step in for his first full start.
Meanwhile, Notre Dame will be led by athletic quarterback Riley Leonard, who will be an intriguing option for NFL teams to consider in the draft – hoping to elevate his stock in the playoffs.

Kick-off time
Georgia vs. Notre Dame will kick off from New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome, the home of the New Orleans Saints, at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, Jan. 2.
