For anyone who’s relied on Apple Maps for a stress-free travel experience, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese is right there with you in frustration. The WNBA star known for her unapologetic presence both on and off the court went to social media to air her grievances about the navigation app that has become notorious for its flaws.
“Apple Maps please get it together. I’m driving and the navigation is jumping all over the place,” Reese tweeted on Tuesday. A social media debate that quickly drew responses from fans who’ve long since abandoned Apple Maps for alternatives like Google Maps and Waze.
Reese’s point was fresh off a holiday season full of celebrations and gift-giving, including Reese’s signature merchandise making appearances under trees. But post-festivities, Reese found herself at odds with the same app that countless Apple devotees continue to defend.
One fan instantly related to the WNBA star and said, “Use Waze, so much better,” while another took the opportunity to mock Reeses dilemma with a story of their own. “Used Apple Maps to navigate around Italy before and damn near ended up in Russia. Use Google Maps or Waze.” Another joked and said, “Wait till it tells you to drive through the ocean.”
While Reese earned support for her take, several fans condemned her for admitting to tweeting while driving. Her detractors pointed at a possible “addiction” to social media, while others pointed out the irony of her haters not missing any of her social media updates.
Despite being one of Apple’s flagship apps, Apple Maps remains a punching bag for its inferior performance. The app features a 2.6-star rating on the brands own App Store from over 30,000 reviews. The app frequently receives complaints about inaccurate navigation, clunky Siri integration, and outdated real-time traffic data. Users often cite experiences that feel more like scavenger hunts than point-A-to-point-B directions.
Google Maps has a solid 3.7-star rating from 18.5 million reviews and has been downloaded over 10 billion times globally. Known for its reliable updates and cutting-edge features, it’s no wonder fans urged Reese to jump ship.
Reese has seemingly aligned herself with the Apple ecosystem, as shown by her merchandise website featuring Reese-branded iPhone cases. She has two iPhone cases featuring her likeness for $25 while not featuring protection for a single Android device.
While Reese never revealed where she was heading, she is already looking forward to her next big travel moment, which will be an attempt to lead the Rose Basketball Club into their inaugural Unrivaled League matchup against Vinyl BC on January 17. Airing on TNT and streaming on Max, the 3×3 matchup will take place in sunny Miami, Florida, a place Reese has previously referred to the area as her new home.
