Is change on the horizon in Pittsburgh?

The Steelers value continuity, even after disappointing years, but a 28-14 wild-card loss to the Ravens on Saturday night stretched the prestigious franchise’s playoff win drought to eight seasons. That has some speculating about the future of coach Mike Tomlin.

According to Amazon Prime Video’s Tony Gonzalez, rumors of a change might be more than just speculation.

Gonzalez vaguely referenced “texts” he received about “whispers” of a Steelers coaching change, though it wouldn’t involve Tomlin getting fired.

“I’m not saying the f-word,” Gonzalez said during Saturday’s post-game show, referring to the word “fired.” Instead, Gonzalez hinted that he’s heard rumors of a “change of scenery” for Tomlin.”

“This would be something mutually agreed upon if Mike Tomlin got a fresh start somewhere else,” Gonzalez said.

Tomlin, a Super Bowl champion 16 years ago, has famously never had a losing season in 18 years in Pittsburgh, but the Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since the 2016 season and have lost at least seven games in five of their past six seasons.

Many franchises would gladly accept that kind of stability, but it’s gotten monotonous for many Steelers fans — especially after Pittsburgh lost its final five games this season, including Saturday’s defeat in Baltimore.

MORE: Should the Steelers fire Mike Tomlin?

This isn’t the first time Tomlin has been at the center of speculation about his future. Just a year ago, reports indicated he wasn’t guaranteed to stay with the Steelers past the end of his contract in 2024 — only for Tomlin to sign a three-year extension shortly after a playoff loss to the Bills.

The extension kicks in next season, so any decision by Tomlin to try something new wouldn’t be as easy as simply moving on as a free agent like Mike McCarthy can do in Dallas. If the “whispers” Gonzalez is hearing are correct, though, a seismic decision is at least on the table.
