Did Todd Bowles play in the NFL?

Before entering coaching, Bowles produced a solid career as a defensive back in the NFL, primarily serving as a free safety.

Bowles played college football at Temple, but after four years with the Owls, he went undrafted in the 1986 NFL Draft. The former defensive back signed as an undrafted free agent with Washington and earned his way onto the roster.

In his rookie season, Bowles played 15 games and earned two starts, setting himself up well for his future. He would go on to become a crucial starter on Washington’s defense, starting 60 games from 1987 to 1990.

In 1987, Bowles was the starting free safety on Washington’s second Super Bowl championship team, as the team defeated the Broncos 42-10 in Super Bowl 22.

After the 1990 season, Bowles signed with the 49ers and started 14 of 16 games in the defensive backfield. However, by leaving Washington, Bowles missed out on a second Super Bowl title, as Washington won it all again in 1991.

Bowles returned to Washington in 1992 after the 49ers waived him.

Where did Todd Bowles play football?

Despite playing 12 years of football in his career — four in college and eight in the NFL — Bowles only played for three different teams.

First, Bowles played four seasons for Temple, appearing in 41 games while recording seven interceptions as a defensive back. After graduating, Bowles signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent. He spent seven of his eight professional seasons with the franchise.

The only season in his NFL career when Bowles didn’t play for Washington was in 1991 when he instead played for the 49ers.
