In the NFL, the biggest question that teams are constantly asking themselves is, “Do we have our guy at quarterback?” For most franchises, that’s a question that needs to be addressed far too often. For the Green Bay Packers, it’s been answered for several decades.
Luckily for Packers fans, they have not been without a franchise quarterback this century. The team has seamlessly transitioned from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love over the years.
In his second season as the full-time starter in Green Bay, Love is on his way to a second-straight playoff appearance. Their playoff run came to a close in the divisional round last year, but this is a team with their sights set much higher ahead of the 2025 playoffs.
If all goes according to plan, Love will be under center throughout Green Bay’s playoff push. However, if he’s unable to take the field at any point, who will step in to replace him?

Who is the Packers’ backup quarterback?
If Love is forced to miss any time during the playoffs, Malik Willis will serve as the Packers’ starting quarterback.
Willis, originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans, was acquired by the Packers this offseason via trade. Green Bay sent a seventh-round pick to Tennessee in exchange for Willis.
Willis has actually made two starts in place of an injured Love this season, both resulting in victories for Green Bay. One of those wins came against his former team when the Packers defeated the Titans in Week 3.
With Willis under center, the Packers have opted to go extremely run-heavy as he is not known to be the most polished of passers. He attempted just 23 passes in his two starts while starting running back Josh Jacobs received a whopping 46 carries.
If Willis is forced to take the field during the playoffs, the Green Bay offense will likely become quite one-dimensional once again and it would be a tall order for Willis to carry the team to a win.

The Packers are one of nearly a dozen NFL teams with just two quarterbacks on the active roster, with those quarterbacks being Love and Willis.
Former Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford is on the practice squad but has not appeared in a game this season. He’ll likely only be elevated to the active roster if Love sustains an injury at some point during the playoffs.
