Julia Michaels and Maren Morris are feeling snippy.

In their new music video for their song “Scissors” released on Friday, Jan. 11, Michaels, 31, and Morris, 34, decide to cut things off with an ex in an unconventional, albeit clever, way.

Michaels uses scissors to curl a giant ribbon for her lover’s bright red convertible, slices a lemon with a knife and vacuums the driveway. Morris, meanwhile, lounges around with black cats while watching Michaels plot revenge, ultimately teaming up to do their worst.

“You wanna say goodbye, I’m not crying rivers/If you wanna cut ties, I’ll get the scissors, baby,
Michaels and Morris sing in the chorus. “I don’t mind, I’m not even bitter/If you wanna cut ties, I’ll get the scissors, baby.”

At the end of the clip, the singers decide to castrate the ex in question with a pair of tiny scissors and even pose with sharp objects a la Edward Scissorhands.

The singers told Rolling Stone about their latest project together. ” ‘Scissors’ is a funny way of saying that I’m unbothered. My skin is thick,” Michaels said, adding, “I’m not pressed if someone wants to leave. Half the time I don’t want them to stay either.”

“It’s about being nonchalant when a relationship fizzles, because, let’s be honest, most of them do,” Morris told the publication. “Not everything ends in heartbreak, but sometimes apathy and a lightheartedness, which sorely needs representation in breakup songs!”

“Scissors” marks the third collaboration for Michaels and Morris, having released “Cut!” together in June 2024. “It’s a cathartic release that doesn’t require secrecy, but there are worldly expectations to keep it together despite your feelings,” Morris said in a statement at the time about their duet.

“This song gives me permission to fall apart.” Michaels previously co-wrote “Circles Around This Town,” the lead single of Morris’ 2022 album Humble Quest.

In the comments of the music video, Michaels wrote that the house used for “Scissors” had perished in the Los Angeles fires. “I feel so deeply sad for the family that lent their home to us to create this video,” she wrote.

“I just have no words for the devastation that has transpired in such a short span of time.” Michaels also encouraged fans to donate via GoFundMe to help the family whose home was used to rebuild, pinning the link in the comments section.
