Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has reportedly received a $6 million offer to return to college football next season, but not with the Longhorns.
Ewers is yet to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft, although with Texas still in the College Football Playoffs, the delay isn’t totally unexpected. However, there’s major speculation that Ewers could return to college football and see out the final year of his eligibility in a bid to boost his draft stock ahead of 2026.
The Longhorns have made it clear that backup quarterback, Arch Manning, will start next season, meaning that Ewers may need to enter the transfer portal. According to On3 Sports, Ewers has already received a major offer from an unnamed school in an attempt to secure his services for next season.
Ewers was a projected first-round pick heading into this year, but his draft stock has taken a hit, meaning that if he declared he may not be selected until the second round. With $6 million reportedly on the table and several teams expressing interest, it’s increasingly likely that Ewers will remain in college for another year.
Texas fans are excited to see Manning unleashed next season, with the 19-year-old already showing signs that he could emulate the success enjoyed by members of his family. Manning is the grandson of New Orleans Saints legend Archie Manning, and the nephew of NFL legends Eli and Peyton Manning.
Fans have called for Manning to start over Ewers at times this season, and former Longhorns wide receiver Johntay Cook has also made his feelings clear. Cook spent two seasons with Ewers before transferring to Washington, and is surprised by the reports he’s been offered $6 million for next season.
When responding to the Ewers’ story on X, Cook replied: “Wasting yall money fr (for real).” Cook has since deleted the post, but his reaction was captured by several fans.
The plan for Manning has never changed. He’s always wanted to play for Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian believes he will be ready next season. When responding to his future, Manning said recently: “I really have no plans on entering the portal or anything, so I don’t really know about it, the whole windows and everything.”
Ewers will still complete this season with the Longhorns, and faces Arizona State on Wednesday with a ticket to the semi-finals on offer. Should Texas advance, they’ll face either Oregon or Ohio State, giving Ewers a major chance to impress potential suitors ahead of next season.
Manning has shown his class this season by accepting he is No. 2 on the depth chart, and insists he is close friends with Ewers while crediting the Longhorns’ starter with teaching him valuable lessons. “Really, just what I’ve learned the most about Quinn is how he handles the media,” Manning told Orangebloods.
“He doesn’t really let that get to him. He treats me the same. I know it’s probably not easy for [him with] me being the backup, everyone’s trying to talk about it, but he doesn’t let it bother him at all. He’s just one of the guys. One of my good friends.”
