New York Jets star cornerback DJ Reed has told the team he’s ready to leave this offseason while seemingly suggesting that he wants to test the market while having little interest on re-signing.
The Jets’ nightmare season has continued ever since the opening week of the season, losing games while making several all-in months and hampering their ability to rebuild for the future – including trading for Davante Adams and, of course, trading for Aaron Rodgers.
While Rodgers looks set to leave the franchise, his cutting means the Jets will have to eat much of his salary will still having another year on his contract, with Adams also set to have a large amount allocated to him next season. That will make improving on a roster that has just four wins even tougher, while also potentially losing some of their own players who are set to become free agents.
Reed is one of those players who’s deal is up at the end of the year, with the veteran cornerback rocking the Jets with his latest comments, telling Go Long’s Tyler Dunne that he’s looking forward to free agency. He said: “Im ready to go to free agency, bro. Im ready to see whats next for me.”
One of the better and perhaps more underappreciated player on the Jets’ roster, Reed has been an extremely dependable player at cornerback opposite Sauce Gardner, with the former arguably having a better year between the two of them this season.
Reed is sure to have several teams available in him this offseason, with his two former teams in the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers likely to be hoping to bring him back.
The Jets will be rebuilding once again in 2025, having fired both of their general manager and head coach, while also likely to be set to look for a new quarterback with ownership looking to move on from Rodgers.
Should that be the case, then the Jets would probably be best suited to let Reed walk, while saving cap space in order to begin the rebuild, most notably needing to improve their offensive line as well as keeping assets to eventually find their new long-term quarterback.
