Jordan Spieths long-time caddie and friend Michael Greller will still be on the course at The Sentry with him to cover PGA Tour rival Max Homa.
The 2025 PGA Tour season will begin on Thursday with The Sentry at the Kapalua Plantation Course, but three-time major winner Spieth will not a part of the opening event. Spieth is continuing his recovery from wrist surgery after he injured his left hand while playing with his son Sammy.
Spieth had attempted to avoid surgery and instead tried a rest-and-recovery strategy, but the issue worsened during the 2024 season after a tendon in his wrist reportedly popped out while playing, leaving the 31-year-old no choice but to undergo a procedure. This leaves him out of action and had also seemingly sidelined his caddie.
However, its been reported by Sean Martin on X that Greller will be at The Sentry to caddy for Homa as a fill-in. A Spieth fan account, Spieth Legion, also posted the news on X, the account wrote: Michael Greller has a new bag this week. Hes caddying for Max Homa at The Sentry. Its just temporary. Grellers boss, Jordan Spieth, isnt in the field, and Homa needed a temporary fill-in. His longtime caddie, Joe Greiner, is expected to return later in the West Coast swing.
Greller has been Spieths caddie for 13 years since the former world No. 1 turned professional. The two met during the US Junior Amateur and stayed friends with Greller initially taking a year off from his teaching job to begin working with Spieth.
Spieth and Grellers relationship has worked a treat down the years with Spieth winning the Masters and the US Open in 2015 before picking up The Open in 2017. However, Grellers style is a controversial one with the two known to engage in long discussion before Spieth plays a shot, but its an approach that Homa is seemingly willing to try.
Homa could be hoping a change of tacric will bring him new fortunes with his last victory coming in 2023 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Off the back of a winless 2024, that saw him make just three top-10 finishes and four missed cuts. The 34-year-old is said to be returning to his long-time caddie but it will be interesting to see whether that plan changes depending on his finish at The Sentry.
But Spieth too has been struggling, also failing to win in 2024 and making just four top-25 finishes with seven missed cuts across the 22 events he played in. Spieth last played at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August where he finished at T68, seeing him fail to qualify for the BMW Championship.
Speaking on his injury rehabilitation, Spieth told SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio earlier this month his wrist is recovering well. Everythings gone according to plan, Spieth said. Ive been kind of hitting on a ball count the last couple weeks and then I got the full go this last weekend. The weathers been good here in Dallas, Ive been at it the last, well, really, I hit Nerf balls for a while so I could work on some mechanics and not have the contact.
Now I have zero restrictions. It feels good. None of the shots, you know, I dont really have any problems with it. No pain, no anything. So now its kind of just taking care of it, continuing to do therapy probably through the New Year, and just be prepared to go start playing some golf and be prepared to play three weeks in a row. I think thats kind of the next step is actually getting out and playing, which will be fun. Itll be a little rusty to start for sure.
